You are Killing Your Business with Your Ego

Toddlers say it, I have said, and I bet you have said it many times. Part of this is innate; and it comes in the form of the Id and the Ego. These are psychoanalytic terms coined by Sigmund Freud. While the concepts are far more in-depth and involved than we will go in this post, just know that the Id and Ego can affect how successful we become in business and how painful we allow the journey to become.

The Id is the personality component of our brain made up of unconscious psychic energy that works to satisfy basic urges, needs, and desires. In the context of business, it is what says, “just do it yourself.” The Ego is something we develop. It shapes how we perceive, reason, make judgments, store knowledge, and solve problems.

The Id and Ego are necessary, and they are great when they are managed and controlled; however, when they aren’t, they tend to cause problems. They tell us that we can do things that we can’t or shouldn’t. This leads to poor decision making, and sometimes that leads to problems in our life. In the case of our business, the Id and Ego can give us the false hope that we can do everything on our own, without external assistance.

But What Does this REALLY Mean?

Now the title of this post is losing your ego, improve your business. I do not mean to imply that we can or should lose our ego in a literal sense. Instead, what I mean is we need to manage and control it. We need to be able to see the reality around us and have the confidence and comfort in asking for help.

Starting a business, building it properly, and growing it is HARD work! It can also often be overwhelming at times. Unfortunately, too many of us, too often, allow the Id and Ego to tell us that we can do it and don’t need any help. We continue floundering, bouncing from idea to idea and program to program. The result is often a failure to launch and the loss of time and money.

There is no benefit in spinning your wheels when it is obvious that you don’t have the knowledge and experience. We all must learn things from the beginning, particularly when we are talking about technology and marketing principles. These are not traits we are born with. I admit that there are some things we can learn on our own, but it is often much quicker, easier, and cost effective to work with someone and learn the right way to do it.

Don’t try to do it all yourself!

We are taught from an early age to be self-sufficient; to do things on our own. I believe that in most cases this is true. There is that awesome feeling when we accomplish wonderful things without help. With that being said, there is no shame in asking for help. In fact, sometimes it is smart to leverage others’ expertise and knowledge. It is OK, and I highly recommend, that you leverage the awesome tools available to you.

In this day and age of technology and with the Internet, we have access to so many incredible tools and courses that can help you with building your business. You just need to know where to look. We can find everything from templates for social media and web pages, to courses on how to optimize your site and pages, to plug-ins and programs that making building your business SO much easier! There are also mentors, coaches, and organizations there to help you learn and succeed.

Business Tools

Everyone needs a little help with growing their business and building their brand. Unfortunately, not everyone has the knowledge and expertise needed to create the awesome ads, beautiful graphics, or perfect branding. But luckily, there are some incredible businesses out there who specialize in just that! They are here to help you with building your business.

We have so many helpful tools and courses at our disposal. There are coaching and mentoring programs, social media and optimization courses, printables, templates, and so much more.

Coaching and Mentoring

Sometimes we just need a little help. Oftentimes, when we are going into areas that are completely new to us (switching careers or launching a new business), we need it sooner than later. I found a wonderful coaching and mentoring program called Partnership to Success. They offer coaching, mentorship, and training. They work with newbies like me–getting us set up for success with a strong foundation–then they continue to mentor as you grow and succeed. The relationship building within the group is amazing!

I have to admit that I was initially very leery about working with someone and trusting that person with my business. I needed to know that the person I worked with would look out for my best interests. I did quite a bit of research into the program and those who run it before I decided to give it a go. In hindsight, I wish I had done it a LONG time ago! I would have saved myself so much time, hassle, and money had I controlled my Id and Ego and recognized that I needed guidance. I watched this webinar and knew right away that this was what I was missing. This is what was finally going to get me on a solid foundation.

I am a huge advocate for learning. I believe that taking the time to learn how work on building your business is worth more than you can put a price tag on. I am constantly working on training in various areas of my life. I take a few hours a week to search for and take courses that will help me build by business. Many of the training sessions come from Partnership to Success while others come from external sources. There are so many awesome courses and workshops out there. Here are a couple to consider.

Templates and Printables

Building your business is so much easier when you use templates and printables. It is amazing how much time (and frustration) you can save by leveraging the layouts and tools that others develop and market.
